Nina Sky_ Stifle Your Yawn
Who’s Nina Sky again? I only remember thinking about them
because I thought them resident non-factors teetering on the brink of the
D-List of celebrities… but do they even qualify to be celebrities? For
starters, the crux of celeb-dom is to be on the mainstream which is where they
were smart enough to jump ship before they drowned. Renowned for that “Move Your Body” anthem, Nina Sky might
have been more pervasive female pioneers in the reggaeton genre but this was clearly
eclipsed by the wonder of that one hit.
Fast forward 4 years of unfortunate oblivion and they are
back on track, riding the subway to success instead of the bus with fresh
underground personas aiming to capture the attention of the ADHD hyped hipster
generation. In light of the turmoil of label drama and restructuring, Nina Sky
finally released their second album since 2004 titled Nicole & Natalie. The second single Heartbeat sees their sound having done a 360 into the typical pop
rave kind synonymous with modernity although their voices remain archaically
R&B. Not much of a cohesive combination for audio delight.
Their edgy makeovers however were paramount to the revival
of public interest. Nicole now sports are butch
boy cut (mind you, not “pixie” or “Rihanna”) and Natalie
a similar androgynous set of short-short bangs despite maintaining her hair at
a feminine length, resulting in an overall ying-yang effect between them. The
fact that we can now tell them apart is the main improvement – individuality is
key to curiosity. Each also rock numerous sporadically positioned tattoos. Whoever the new stylist (or the firing of
their old one) catapults them out of the red/yellow/green and rara skirt hell-hole
of the early 2000s into the futuristic realm of leathers, Creepers and sharp
accessories.
In 2010, Nicole came out to the world and revealed her
marriage to female fashion designer Erin Magee. This meant a breakthrough in
that their private lives are finally yielding to the prying propensities of the
public- another quintessential characteristic of celebrities. Whether we truly
harbor the concern or whether they have truly harnessed the formula to
relevance, Nina Sky has proven capable of evolution- so I suppose their chances
are much better this time around.
